Holder count vs holder quality: why 5,000 holders can mean less than 500
Holder count is the most quoted number on a new coin and one of the easiest to inflate. Sending a few tokens to thousands of wallets costs very little. So the count alone does not tell you how many people actually own the coin.
Dust: holders in name only
A dust holder has a balance too small to matter: an airdrop, a leftover after selling, or a spam transfer. Whodl counts holders twice, the raw count and the count above dust.
Across not enough data yet coins with both counts, the median share of holders that are dust was not enough data yet, and on not enough data yet of coins dust wallets were half or more of all holders.
The four checks of holder quality
- Holders above dust. The real crowd. Compare it with market cap using the holder to market cap ratio.
- Fresh-wallet share. Wallets with fewer than 100 lifetime transactions are often created for one coin. On the median coin they held 2.1% of supply; see fresh vs established wallets.
- Linked supply. Many holders funded from one source are one holder. See bundle vs cluster.
- Wallet history. A holder with a record on earlier coins is a different kind of holder from a new wallet. On not enough data yet of coins Whodl found at least one smart-money wallet in the top holders. See how to read a wallet's history across coins.
Signs the count is padded
- The count jumps by thousands in an hour while volume barely moves.
- Most of the new holders hold the same tiny amount.
- The top 10 share does not drop as the count climbs. Real distribution moves supply away from the top; padding does not.
What a quality crowd looks like
A slowly rising count above dust, a falling top 10 share, a modest fresh-wallet share and wallets with history. None of that makes a coin a good buy; it means the holder number is telling you something real.
Every coin page under coin reports shows the raw count, the count above dust and the fresh-wallet share at each scan.
