Why can't I sell my meme coin? Seven reasons, from freeze authority to an empty pool

You press sell and the transaction fails, or it goes through and you get back a fraction of what the chart said. Before assuming the worst, work through the causes in order. The first three are ordinary and fixable. The last four are built into the coin, and they are what people mean by a honeypot.

1. The wallet cannot pay the fee

On Solana every transaction needs a little SOL for the network fee and, the first time you receive a token, for the token account. A wallet holding only the meme coin and no SOL cannot sell. On EVM chains the same applies to ETH, BNB or the chain's gas token. Fix: add a small amount of the gas token and try again.

2. Slippage is set lower than the price impact

If the pool is small, your own sell moves the price. When that move is bigger than your slippage setting, the swap is rejected to protect you. Check: the price impact your swap tool shows before you confirm. If it is large, the pool is thin compared with your position; selling in parts gets a better total. How "if they sell, price drops X%" is calculated.

3. You are on the wrong pool or the wrong coin

Copycat coins share tickers, and some tokens are airdropped into wallets uninvited, with no pool at all. If the coin in your wallet has a different contract from the one you meant to buy, there may be nothing to sell into. Check: match the full contract address. How to find the real contract address. A token you never bought is best left alone; interacting with it can be the first step of a drainer (see meme coin scams).

4. Your token account is frozen (Solana)

A Solana token can keep a freeze authority: a key that can freeze any holder's token account so it cannot send or sell. Most launchpad coins revoke it at creation, but not all coins do. Across the coins Whodl has checked, 0% still had an active freeze authority at the time of the scan, and 1.4% still had an active mint authority (more tokens can be created). Check: a Whodl coin page shows both under "Is it a scam? What the wallets show". An active freeze authority does not mean it will be used, but it means it can be.

5. Token-2022 extensions (Solana)

Coins made with the newer Token-2022 program can carry extensions that change how transfers work:

  • Transfer hook: a program that runs on every transfer and can reject it.
  • Transfer fee: a cut taken from every transfer, including your sell.
  • Permanent delegate: an address that can move or burn tokens from any holder's account.
  • Non-transferable: the token cannot move at all.

Each has legitimate uses, but on a meme coin they are worth knowing about before you buy. Whodl flags these extensions when it reads a coin's contract.

6. Sell restrictions in the contract (EVM chains)

On Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain and other EVM chains, a token is a contract the deployer wrote, and it can include almost any rule: a sell tax that can be raised to 99%, a blacklist of wallets that cannot sell, a maximum sell size, or a switch that turns trading off for everyone but the owner. Check: whether the contract is verified, whether ownership was renounced, and whether the owner can change taxes or limits. Simulation tools that test a buy and a sell can catch many of these before you buy.

7. There is no liquidity left

If the liquidity was removed from the pool, or the pool was always tiny, a sell has nothing to trade against. The coin still shows a price, but it is the price of the last trade, not what you can get. Check: the pool's current liquidity against the size of your position, and against what the top 10 holders own. How much liquidity is enough.
