Robinhood Chain gas fees: what a swap costs, and why fees spiked

Robinhood Chain pays gas in ETH, like Ethereum and most of its layer 2s. Most of the time a transaction costs fractions of a cent to a few cents. That changed for a stretch in late summer 2026, and the episode is the best guide to what can happen again.

What transactions have cost

Analysis by the data firm Bitquery of the period from late August to early September 2026 found:

TransactionMedian cost, 22 AugMedian cost, 3 Sep
Any transactionabout $0.006about $0.20
ETH transferabout $0.001about $0.024
Swap through the main routerabout $0.012about $0.48

These are third-party measurements of a specific window, not current prices.

The spike

The chain's base fee sat at its floor for most of its first two months, then left it on August 24 and stayed above it. Total fees paid per day rose from roughly $55,000 on August 22 to roughly $4.5 million in early September, depending on the source. Reports described it as fees rising more than eighty-fold in eleven days.

Why is disputed. Bitquery attributed most of the extra demand to a handful of addresses, including a swap router, a settlement contract and bundled smart-wallet transactions, and said token launches barely moved it. Other reporting attributed it to memecoin launches and a launchpad upgrade. The data does not settle it.

Subsidies

Robinhood has covered gas on some swaps made inside Robinhood Wallet during promotional periods, reported as swaps above $0.50 through late September 2026. Check the wallet's current terms; subsidies end.

How to check fees yourself

  • Your wallet shows the fee before you sign. On a busy day, compare it with the trade size: a $0.48 fee on a $10 memecoin buy is about 5% before slippage.
  • The official explorer shows recent transactions and the fees they paid.

Fees are rarely the biggest cost

On a new coin, slippage and the pool's depth usually cost more than gas. See how much liquidity is enough for a memecoin, and remember the exit: withdrawing to Ethereum through the canonical bridge takes about a week (Robinhood Chain bridge). Scanned Robinhood Chain coins are under coin reports.
