Mention spike vs holder growth: which one leads the price?
A coin trends on X. Is that the start of the move or the end of it? One way to tell is to compare two growth rates: how fast posts about the coin are growing and how fast its holders are growing.
The Hype Gap
Whodl's Hype Gap puts those two rates on one scale from 0 to 100:
- 50: posts and holders are growing at the same pace.
- Above 50: X posts are growing faster than new buyers.
- Below 50: new buyers are growing faster than X posts.
It uses growth rates, not raw counts, so a small coin and a large one read on the same scale. Bot-like posts pull it toward 50. The full method is in Whodl's scores explained.
What happened next
Whodl checks every scanned coin 24 hours after its first scan. Split by Hype Gap at the scan:
| Hype Gap at scan | Coins | Higher 24h later | Median 24h change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 or more (posts far ahead) | not enough data yet | not enough data yet | not enough data yet |
| 30 or less (buyers ahead) | not enough data yet | not enough data yet | not enough data yet |
| All coins with a 24h check | not enough data yet | not enough data yet | not enough data yet |
Compare the two rows with the bottom one. A day is short, the groups can be small, and the numbers update as checks land, so read them as a running record rather than a rule.
Why posts can run ahead
- Paid promotion. A wave of posts from accounts paid to post arrives at once and buyers trickle in after, or never. See does paying DEX Screener help a coin for the listing side of the same question.
- Copy-paste campaigns. Whodl counts near-identical posts as one voice, which narrows the gap.
- Late attention. Posts often peak after the price has moved, when people share gains.
Why buyers can run ahead
When holders grow faster than talk, people are buying on something other than X: a Telegram call, a DEX Screener trending slot, or wallets copying smart money. The coin's report shows where the new holders came from and whether any have a winning record.
How to use it
Read the Hype Gap next to the Room score and the Timing score. A high gap with a late Timing reading describes attention arriving after the move. Every coin page under coin reports shows all three at each scan.
